In celebration of International Women’s Day in Maritime, marked on 18 May every year, maritime industry professionals convened to address gender diversity and empowerment within their sector, echoing this year’s International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) theme of “empowering women.”
In an event that brought together industry professionals from various maritime disciplines, the spotlight was on accelerating change toward gender parity in the sector. A mix of inspirational stories and potent messages highlighted the need for greater diversity and inclusion in all forms within the industry.
While strides have been made towards gender diversity, particularly in the transport sector, the conversation identified the urgency for greater advocacy and empowerment to attract more women to maritime careers. Collaborations with other industries, such as construction and railways, were recognized as essential steps in this direction through shared experiences and mutual learning.
Baroness Vere, the Maritime Minister, underscored the need for recruitment and retention of both women and men in the industry. She emphasized the creation of an environment conducive to individual growth and full potential realization.
Petra Wilkinson, CBE, Director of Maritime at the Department for Transport, reiterated the importance of promoting available career opportunities for women in maritime. She underlined the significance of establishing a strong foundation for a thriving sector. A panel discussion titled “Empowering Women in Maritime: Unlocking Opportunities and Driving Change” featured industry leaders from the commercial, charity, and government sectors. Panelists candidly shared lessons from their personal journeys and discussed strategies for boosting diversity and inclusion within organizations.
