Turkish Navy unveils future aircraft carrier design

The Turkish Ministry of National Defense recently shared a glimpse into the future of the Turkish Navy’s capabilities, showcasing the design of its upcoming aircraft carrier. During a visit to the Turkish Navy’s Design Project Office on February 16, 2024, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, along with key defense officials, reviewed the progress of this indigenous carrier project

The design of the National Aircraft Carrier, a product of the Design Project Office Directorate’s engineering expertise and Turkey’s tradition in warship design, was closely inspected during the visit. This project builds on the experience gained from the design and manufacturing of the TCG Istanbul Frigate.

Key specifications of the carrier, as revealed in the images, include its 60,000-tonne weight and a length of 285 meters. The carrier will feature a STOBAR (Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) system for air operations and a COGAG (Combined Gas Turbine and Gas Turbine) propulsion system, enabling a top speed of 25 knots.

Another significant detail is the depiction of the indigenous fighter jet, KAAN (formerly known as TF-X), on the carrier. While a naval version of KAAN is not yet in development, its strategic placement in the design indicates a clear intention for its use.

President Erdoğan first indicated the Turkish Navy’s interest in aircraft carriers during a 2021 meeting with the Spanish president, discussing potential collaborations with Spain on aircraft carriers and submarines. While Navantia, a Spanish company, confirmed ongoing talks about submarine collaboration and a Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) at the World Defence Show in Riyadh, the latest images suggest Turkey’s focus on developing a full-fledged aircraft carrier, primarily designed by Turkish engineers.

The decision to opt for a STOBAR system reflects considerations of cost-effectiveness, although design adjustments may occur in response to changing needs and geopolitical factors. The extent of Spanish collaboration in this ambitious project remains to be officially detailed.
