Top insurer promotes use of AI navigation safety tool

MDN Editör

North Standard has decided to subsidize the use of AI-based collision avoidance on its customers’ vessels following successful trials

Through a new program, it will help pay for the installation and use of Orca AI’s navigation safety technology.

The rationale for this decision is demonstrated by Orca AI’s performance numbers. By 2023, the 267 vessels that use the system have reduced the number of close calls by 33% and the number of collisions by 40%. These decreases seem to indicate that the ships with the system spend less time in collision-prone conditions.

It comprises a bridge-mounted camera pod, an interactive bridge crew surface and a shore-based performance tracking system. Onboard tools provide real-time alerts to crew members, while a performance dashboard and high-resolution video from a camera pod provide shore managers with an unprecedented level of visibility into operations at sea. It is a powerful tool for safety management.
