Maersk acquires green methanol formaiden voyage of dual-fuel container ship

MDN Editör

Maersk, one of Denmark’s largest maritime transport companies, has secured green methanol fuel for the maiden voyage of its first dual-fuel container ship under construction in South Korea. As part of the agreement, OCI Global (Euronext: OCI) will supply Maersk with ISCC certified green biomethanol for the ship’s initial journey to Northern Europe via the Suez Canal this summer.

The ship will refuel at several major ports along its route, including the Port of Rotterdam. The feeder ship, with a capacity of 2,100 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), is the first of nineteen carbon-neutral ships powered by green methanol that Maersk has ordered. The 172-meter-long vessel, which entered service in July 2021, will operate on the Baltic route connecting Northern Europe and the Gulf of Bothnia.

The other 18 dual-fuel ships will be much larger, with capacities of 16,000 and 17,000 TEUs, and are set to be delivered in 2024 and 2025, construct by Hyundai Heavy Industries.
