The onboard microplastic collection device co-developed by Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and machinery industry company Miura is approved by the classification society ClassNK

After the device, HQ-100/HQ-100B, was installed aboard Emerald Ace in June 2022, it successfully demonstrated its functions and following an audit it recieved the Innovation Endorsement certification.

The device that collects microplastics (MPs) at all times from the seawater line without clogging the vessel’s piping, separates MPs in seawater with a cyclone separator. The HQ-100/HQ-100B device can also be installed in the cooling seawater line with almost no impact on the existing system because the treated seawater can be returned to the raw water line.

Only maintenance requirement of the device is the daily cleaning of the microplastics collection strainer.

ClassNK said that as well as approving the functions of the device, it also verifies that the microplastics in onboard seawater lines can, in fact, be collected at all times while the vessel is underway.
