Saudi Arabia advocates for enhanced maritime security in Gulf Region

In March, facilitated by China, Iran and Saudi Arabia reached an agreement to end their diplomatic tensions and restore relations. This move came after years of strained relations that threatened regional stability, impacting areas including the Gulf, Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon.

Prince Faisal highlighted the importance of collaboration between the two nations on regional security, particularly the security of maritime navigation. He emphasized the need for collective cooperation among all regional countries to ensure a region free from weapons of mass destruction.

Following a discussion with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amirabdollahian, in Tehran, Prince Faisal announced that the Saudi king and crown prince eagerly anticipate an acceptance from Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to their invitation for a visit to the Kingdom in the near future.

Amirabdollahian underscored the importance of security for regional countries during a televised joint media event. He clarified Iran’s perspective on security, noting that it does not equate security with militarism. Instead, Iran views security as a broad concept that encompasses political, cultural, social, economic, and trade aspects.

The Kingdom severed ties with Iran in 2016 following an attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran. The attack was a reaction to Riyadh’s execution of a prominent Shiite cleric.
