KR certifies HMM’s greenhouse gas reduction calculation method

Korean Register (KR) has awarded HMM, South Korea’s leading shipping company, a third-party verification certificate for its “Greenhouse Gas Reduction Calculation Methodology.” This innovative methodology aligns with the Renewable Energy Directive II, a framework by the European Union to encourage renewable energy use among its members

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions in international shipping by 2050. As part of this endeavor, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology for marine fuel oil is under discussion to support the transition to carbon neutrality.

HMM’s methodology, verified by KR, calculates greenhouse gas reductions based on the fuel’s complete life cycle emissions, encompassing Wellto- Tank (WtT) and Tank-to-Wake (TtW) stages. This approach is integral to HMM’s ‘Green Sailing Service,’ enabling shippers and stakeholders to report direct carbon reductions from HMM vessels using low-carbon fuels.

In light of evolving regulations, shipping companies are exploring alternative fuels and their efficient application. Biofuel, derived from used cooking oil and standard marine oil, is emerging as a viable option that complies with IMO regulations without engine modifications.

HMM is pioneering the use of biofuel in collaboration with GS Caltex and KR. A notable achievement was the successful biofuel trial on the 6,400 TEU container ship HMM TACOMA last year.

SONG Kanghyun, Head & Senior Vice President of KR’s DecarbonizationㆍShip R&D Center, highlighted the industry’s challenges in adopting new technologies and the competitive landscape for next-generation alternative fuels. He reaffirmed KR’s commitment to supporting shipping companies in meeting greenhouse gas regulations by advancing alternative fuel technologies and staying abreast of international regulations.
