Collaboration between academia and industry earns Blue Homeland a critical local system

STM and Bahçeşehir University have joined forces to create Türkiye’s inaugural “CTD Probe” system entirely from local and national resources. The probe will be utilized for collecting data on seawater’s physical properties aboard oceanographic research and naval platforms. After successfully passing all necessary environmental, factory acceptance, and field tests, the CTD Probe System is now available for both national and international underwater military and scientific projects.

STM Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Ticaret A.Ş., a key player in the Turkish defense industry known for developing advanced and national solutions, has marked another milestone through its collaboration with academia and industry. This collaboration has resulted in the development of a critical system previously unavailable in Türkiye.

Leveraging their experience gained from naval projects in collaboration with Bahçeşehir University (BAU) and BAU İnovasyon ve Danışmanlık A.Ş. (BAUMIND), a subsidiary of Bahçeşehir University, STM has designed the CTD Probe System to operate effectively in the most challenging marine conditions. It boasts a robust structure and reliable, accurate sensors.

The CTD Probe System, Türkiye’s first Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) Measurement System, has successfully completed environmental, factory acceptance, and field tests. This system is widely used on military surface/underwater platforms and unmanned marine vehicles engaged in oceanographic scientific research worldwide. It is now available in the market.

The CTD System measures the basic physical properties of seawater, including “Conductivity,” “Temperature,” and “Water Pressure,” in realtime using precise sensors. Additionally, it calculates “Salinity,” “Specific Gravity of Water,” and “Sound Speed” at specific depths through its builtin processor unit. The CTD data is instrumental in establishing underwater sound propagation patterns and aids in the performance modeling of sonar systems.

Unlike similar systems worldwide, the CTD Probe System offers real-time orientation information about both the system itself and the integrated platform thanks to its 3-axis inertial measurement unit.

Manufactured using domestic and national resources, STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz emphasized the importance of a skilled workforce and research and development for the defense sector. He stated, “The CTD Probe System, which we have developed in collaboration with Bahçeşehir University, is a valuable outcome of such collaboration. We are proud to have created such a critical system using national resources in cooperation with academia.”

Güleryüz also noted the successful completion of key tests, saying, “The Hydrostatic External Pressure Test, one of the most crucial environmental tests for products like ours, was successfully conducted at the facilities of Gölcük Shipyard Command, an accredited institution. It has passed field tests and secured a place among STM’s licensed products. Before this initiative, Türkiye had to import CTD probes from abroad for various domestic and international projects and relied on foreign suppliers for periodic sensor calibration. Our goal is to see our domestically developed CTD Probe system in use in numerous domestic and international projects, including scientific research activities and projects by the Naval Forces Command in the near future. Congratulations to the talented STM and BAU teams who contributed to the project.”
