New SIGINT vessels for Sweden and Poland

MDN İstanbul

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) officially transferred the SIGINT (Signal Intelligence) ship HMS Artemis (A 202) to the Swedish Armed Forces on November 15 in Karlskrona. This event coincided with the commencement of steel cutting in Gdansk for the hull of a second SIGINT ship destined for the Polish Navy. Both vessels share a similar design framework and are part of projects helmed by Saab, the primary contractor.

The HMS Artemis, poised to succeed the 40-year-old HMS Orion (A 201), is not yet mission-ready. Prior to its first operational deployment, scheduled for next year in the Baltic Sea, the ship requires certification and fine-tuning of its SIGINT equipment.

This project, known as Project B104, began with a contract between Saab and FMV signed on April 26, 2017. The conceptual design, which includes specialized equipment, was a collaborative effort between FMV and Saab Kockums, with additional technical design input from the Polish bureau MMC Ship Design & Marine Consulting.

Construction of the Artemis was primarily undertaken by the Polish shipyard Stocznia Remontowa “Nauta” in Gdynia, responsible for the ship’s platform, equipment, and conducting Harbour Acceptance Trials (HAT) and Sea Acceptance Trials (SAT). Postcompletion of the SAT in Poland, the ship was transferred to Saab Kockums in Karlskrona for the installation of specialized equipment.

The hull production was subcontracted to PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, also in Gdynia. The keel-laying followed the steel cutting, which began on March 1, 2018. The ship was launched on April 17, 2019, and its hull was then towed to “Nauta” for further construction.
