Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding (FBS) based in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, recently held a christening ceremony to commemorate the completion of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker barge named “Clean Everglades.”

This vessel is the sibling of the previously constructed LNG barge, “Clean Canaveral,” which was delivered by FBS two years ago and has successfully completed more than 65 LNG bunker deliveries. Sharing a similar design and appearance, the articulated tug barge (ATB) has a storage capacity of 5,500 cubic meters of LNG. Jan Allman, Vice President and General Manager of Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding, commended the timely delivery of the previous FBS-built LNG barge during the global pandemic, emphasizing the achievement. She stated, “We are ready to deliver the Clean Everglades six weeks ahead of schedule, thanks in part to a clean, brilliant design and the motivated, experienced shipbuilders here at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding.”

FBS had been contracted by Seaside LNG to construct a 5,500 cubic meter (CBM) LNG bunker barge. Seaside LNG boasts the largest fleet of Jones Act-compliant LNG barges operating in the United States.

Tim Casey, CEO of Seaside LNG, expressed excitement about expanding LNG bunkering infrastructure in the United States. He highlighted the Clean Everglades’ role in enabling the expansion of LNG bunkering operations to the Gulf of Mexico and praised FBS for its exceptional work on the vessel

The demand for LNG as a maritime fuel is rapidly increasing, with orders for LNG-powered vessels accounting for over 30% of the fleet orderbook. LNG is at the forefront of the maritime sector’s sustainability efforts as it aligns with emissions reduction goals.

The Clean Everglades will be paired with a new 4,000-horsepower tug constructed by Master Boat Builders, Inc., based in Coden, Alabama. The barge is equipped with four 1,375 CBM IMO Type C tanks and utilizes a cargo handling system designed by Wartsila. The vessel has an overall length of 340 feet, a beam of 66 feet, and a depth of 32 feet and 10 inches. It is also classified as an Oceans Classed ABS barge.
