The US Treasury Department, which administers US sanctions policy against Iran, is warning the shipping industry against paying Iran for permission to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Doing so risks incurring US sanctions.

This is stated in a new circular issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control, which is part of the US Treasury Department. The warning covers payments in any form, including payments in cryptocurrency or donations to Iranian aid organisations. It is not known how many ships have paid Iran to pass through the blocked strait.
