At 4 pm Danish time on Monday, the US will impose a blockade on all ships entering or leaving Iranian ports or Iranian waters in both the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Gulf. Ships merely passing through the Strait of Hormuz will have free passage.

The announcement comes from the US military headquarters CENTCOM and contradicts the statement made by President Donald Trump on Sunday that the US would allow all traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

The US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire last Wednesday. It is not immediately clear to what extent the naval blockade constitutes a breach of the ceasefire.

On Sunday, negotiations on a peace agreement between the US and Iran broke down following a 21-hour meeting in Islamabad.

According to the US, the breakdown is due to the Iranians refusing to accept an American demand for a guarantee that Iran will not develop nuclear weapons. The Iranians, for their part, say that the Americans made unreasonable demands and were generally overconfident. No new negotiations have been agreed.
