President Donald Trump has ordered the suspension of US escort operations for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, as Trump himself announced on Sunday. According to the president, Project Freedom is being suspended temporarily to pave the way for negotiations on a final peace agreement.
Confusion is now rife, after the US Secretary of State, Secretary of Defence and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff repeatedly promised on Monday and Tuesday that the US would now ensure free passage through the strait.
The Iranians are interpreting the US U-turn as a major victory, demonstrating that the Americans are incapable of carrying out the plans they launch.
What remains is a global public that looks on with growing bewilderment as the American clown bus zigzags aimlessly through the conflict. Most disappointed, of course, are the tens of thousands of seafarers who, for a second month, have been trapped in the Arabian Gulf, aboard ships offering them ever-deteriorating conditions.
