UN expected to vote on watered-down Hormuz resolution

The UN Security Council is expected to vote on Tuesday on a resolution aimed at strengthening security for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest text instead proposes that countries with an interest in shipping coordinate defensive measures – including the escorting of merchant ships – to ensure free passage through the strategically important strait, writes Reuters. The original proposal from Bahrain included the option to use “all necessary defensive measures”, but this was removed to accommodate China and Russia in particular. According to diplomats, this increases the chances of adoption, but the outcome remains uncertain, as the resolution requires at least nine votes in favour and no veto from the five permanent members.

Trump is threatening Iran with ‘total annihilation’ if they do not open the Strait

Donald Trump has demanded that Iran open the Strait of Hormuz and has set a deadline of 2am on Wednesday morning. Otherwise, he is threatening Iran with “total annihilation”:

“Every single bridge will be razed to the ground and every single power station will be out of action, burn, explode and never be used again if Iran does not comply,” the president said.

A spokesperson for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard says that Trump’s threats will not affect the ongoing military operations.

“The misguided American president’s crude rhetoric, arrogance and baseless threats, which stem from the deadlock he finds himself in and are intended to justify the US’s repeated military defeats, will have no bearing on the continuation of the offensive and crushing operations,” according to tv2.dk, citing the spokesperson.
