Turkey launches domestic submarine project

MDN İstanbul

Turkey’s National Submarine Program (MİLDEN), a project to build the country’s first indigenous submarine has been formally launched. The project is the second phase of the Air Independent Power (AIP) project, which will allow them to remain submerged for much longer than traditional non-nuclear submarines.

INitial personnel have been recruited for the project, according to Adam. Maehmet Sarı, the Deputy General Manager of the Defense Ministry’s Shipyards department, who recently made a presentation at the 9th Maritime Systems Seminar.

Following completion of the designing of the national submarine, construction periods will be planned. The first of the REİS Class submarines are expected to join the submarine fleet between 2022 and 2027. These will be the Turkish Navy’s first AIP submarines. They will be constructed domestically at the Gölcük Shipyard.

The Integrated Combat Systems factory admission test has been successfully completed. Representatives from the Turkish Naval Command, the The Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems attended the testing.

The first ASELSAN communication systems solution developed for a submarine platform was supplied as part of the project. The Integrated Combat System provides underwater and above surface sound and data communication systems.
