It has been confirmed that three Indian crew members aboard the oil tanker Settebello were killed when a U.S. aircraft fired a missile at the ship’s engine room. While the Americans claim the attack was triggered by the tanker’s failure to comply with a stop order, the ship’s owner has denied this claim.
In a statement from the U.S. Central Command (Centcom), it was noted that the Settebello was loaded with Iranian oil and was therefore not permitted to pass through the U.S. blockade. The ship’s owner also denied this. The ship had previously been linked to the transport of Iranian oil. The other 21 crew members, all of Indian nationality, were also evacuated from the ship.

India, along with International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, strongly condemns the attack. “I strongly condemn any action that endangers the lives of seafarers and the safety of international shipping. This is absolutely unacceptable,” says Arsenio Dominguez.
The attack on the Palau-registered vessel Settebekko took place 20 nautical miles off the coast of Sohar.
