Ahead of the upcoming meeting of the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 84), the shipping industry as a whole is calling on member states to find a common solution on new climate regulations.

The announcement comes in a joint press release from key organisations such as BIMCO, the International Chamber of Shipping and the World Shipping Council, which emphasise the IMO’s role as the only effective global regulator for international shipping.

The background is that the adoption of new rules was postponed until October 2025. The industry highlights the need for a global agreement rather than regional solutions, which could lead to double regulation and an uneven playing field. At the same time, the industry highlights that massive investments have already been made in alternative fuels and new technology in line with the IMO’s climate targets. Therefore, future regulations should be technology-neutral and data-driven – with room for both transition fuels such as LNG and new solutions such as e-fuels, ammonia and CO2 capture.

The industry is calling for clear global frameworks that can secure investment and accelerate the production of green fuels. Effective enforcement is also highlighted as crucial. In conclusion, it is emphasised that the maritime green transition requires cooperation across the entire value chain – but that the industry continues to support the IMO as the focal point for regulation.

MIP84 will be held at the IMO headquarters in London from 27 April to 1 May.
