The Chinese-owned MR tanker Rich Starry, registered in Malawi, sailed unhindered through the Strait of Hormuz last night. This is shown by AIS data from Marinetraffic. The data also shows that the vessel sailed in a loop when it was closest to Iran.
Both the tanker and its owner, Shanghai Xuanrun Shipping Co Ltd, are on the US sanctions list, accused of carrying sanctioned Iranian and Russian goods. The Rich Starry was loaded in Hamriyah, in the United Arab Emirates, and has therefore not been in an Iranian port.
The US has gathered around 15 warships at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, and all eyes are now on whether the ship will be allowed to pass the US blockade. The US blockade of ships that have been in Iranian ports, or are en route to Iran, came into force at 4 pm Danish time on Monday.
The ceasefire agreed between the US and Iran expires next week. US media are quoting sources in the White House as saying that the US is now considering whether to extend the ceasefire, after peace talks over the weekend ended without result.
