Late on Sunday, pirates hijacked a cargo ship six nautical miles north-east of the Somali port town of Garacad and forced the vessel into Somali waters. This is the third time in less than a week that pirates have hijacked a ship off the coast of Somalia.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations has confirmed the incident and is urging all vessels in the area to exercise the utmost caution. Last Tuesday, Somali pirates attacked the MR tanker Honour 25 at a position 25 nautical miles off the Somali coast, hijacked the vessel and took the 17-man crew captive. The tanker was subsequently also sailed into Somali waters.
Two further ships were attacked by pirates off Somalia last week, and a Somali fishing vessel was hijacked.
Piracy off the coast of Somalia began to resurface at the end of last year, following a hiatus of almost five years.
The threat from Somali pirates peaked in 2011, when more than 200 attacks took place.
