Sanmar Shipyards has recently conducted naming ceremonies for five innovative tugboats over two consecutive days. The new additions include two of Sanmar’s most powerful LNG-fueled escort tugs to date, as well as three tugs from the revolutionary all-electric ElectRA series.
All five vessels will operate at Canada’s environmental- ly-aware LNG terminal in British Columbia.
On March 7, the first cere- mony took place at Sanmar’s Altinova Shipyard, where two LNG-fueled escort tugs, HAISEA KERMODE and HAISEA WARRIOR, were named. Designed by Vancouver-based naval archi- tects Robert Allan Ltd, these Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugs will be Canada’s first LNG tugs. With a length of 40 meters and over 100 tonnes of bollard pull, they rank among the world’s top-performing escort tugs.
The second ceremony occurred on March 8 at San- mar’s Tuzla Shipyard, during which three ground breaking ElectRA 2800 electric harbor tugs, HAISEA WAMIS, HAISEA WEE’GIT, and HAISEA BRAVE,
were named. These all-elec- tric tugboats, measuring 28.4 meters with over 65 tonnes of bollard pull and 6,102 kWh bat- tery capacity each, will carry out ship-berthing and unberth- ing missions using only battery power. The vessels will recharge at dedicated shore facilities betwee tasks, effectively resulting in zero emissions.
Top executives from LNG Canada, HaiSea Marine, Sea- span Marine, Haisla Nation, and Robert Allan Ltd attended the ceremonies, along with repre- sentatives of the international maritime media.
