Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd to form a new alliance

Following the dissolution of Maersk and MSC’s 2M alliance and Hapag-Lloyd’s leaving THE Alliance, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd is set to launch a new alliance called Gemini Cooperation in February 2025

Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk signed a long-term operational agreement called Gemini Cooperation.

Within the agreement the two companies set a target of delivering schedule reliability of above 90 per cent. The goals for both companies include, improving the service quality, transit times and more. Both companies commited to their decarbonization targets with efforts resulting in significant investments in energy-efficiency improvement from both parties.

There will be 26 mainline services

As part of the agreement, Asia, US West Coast-Asia, US East Coast-Asia, Middle East-Asia, Mediterranean-Asia, North Europe-Middle East-India, Europe and Transatlantic will be covered. Furthermore, there will be 26 mainline services, 14 shuttle services in Europe, 4 in the Middle East, 13 in Asia an one in Gulf of Mexico.

‘This is not a decision against THE Alliance’

Hapag-Lloyd’s CEO Rolf Habben Janen said, “Teaming up with Maersk will help us to further boost the quality we deliver to our customers. Additionally, we will benefit from efficiency gains in our operations and joint efforts to further accelerate the decarbonization of our industry. Let me be very transparent here, this is not a decision against THE Alliance, which has been a long-standing, trusted and successful partnership for us. It is a next step to build something new that we believe will enable us to generate even more value for our customers by pairing our Hapag-Lloyd customer service with much higher operational quality in a robust and resilient network.”

With a flexible ocean network they will be raising the bar for reliability in the industry
