The UK and Norway, together with several allies, have carried out a military operation lasting over a month in the North Atlantic to monitor and deter Russian submarines near critical undersea infrastructure, reports CNN.
According to the British Defence Secretary, John Healey, a British frigate, surveillance aircraft and several hundred soldiers took part in the operation, during which a Russian attack submarine and two Russian spy submarines were closely tracked north of the UK. The Russian vessels left the area without carrying out what Healey described as “malicious operations”.
Both the UK and Norway believe the activity was coordinated by Russia’s deep-sea unit GUGI, which has the capability to map and potentially sabotage undersea cables and pipelines.
According to CNN, the operation highlights the growing concern among NATO countries over threats to critical maritime infrastructure. The British Defence Secretary also issued a direct warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin that any attempt at sabotage would have serious consequences.
