The Dutch-flagged expedition cruise ship MV Hondius, which has been affected by the hantavirus, arrived in Rotterdam on Monday, according to Reuters.
Three people – a Dutch couple and a German national – have died as a result of the outbreak. The ship was previously detained off Cape Verde, where local authorities refused to allow the passengers to disembark.
Following a coordinated evacuation via the Canary Islands, the MV Hondius sailed on to Rotterdam with a reduced crew and two additional healthcare workers on board. Dutch authorities have prepared quarantine facilities for the remaining 23 crew members, and the ship is now to undergo extensive disinfection.
The WHO reported on 15 May that 10 cases had been recorded in connection with the outbreak, of which eight were confirmed and two probable, including the three deaths.
The ship originally had around 150 passengers and crew members from 23 countries on board when the World Health Organisation (WHO) was informed on 2 May of a number of serious respiratory cases.
