Despite the ongoing ceasefire, tensions between the US and Iran have once again led to military clashes in the Strait of Hormuz.

Following a US air strike on an Iranian tanker on Wednesday, Iran responded on Thursday with a large-scale attack on three US destroyers – the USS Truxton, the USS Mason and the USS Rafael Peralta. According to US sources, the attack involved missiles, drones and fast attack craft, some of which came so close that they were engaged with small arms, reports Maritime Executive.

The US responded with air strikes against targets on the island of Qeshm and port areas near Bandar Abbas. According to US Central Command, Iranian military installations, including launch pads and surveillance systems, were hit.

The US maintains that the attacks do not constitute a breach of the ceasefire, but are defensive countermeasures. At the same time, the White House has refrained from describing Iran’s previous attacks on warships, merchant vessels and energy infrastructure as an actual breach of the agreement.
