Feedback for Sanmar tag contributes to Robert Allan design

Input from an experieinced builder has contributed to the evolution of the popular ASD tugboat class Bogacay, built by Turkey’s specialized shipyard Sanmar, a project director with the company has said.
With a new order just placed by an Italian owner, the class designated as Bogacay Series remains one of the most popular tugs in Sanmar’s extensive portfolio. Although an exclusive design specially commissioned by Sanmar from the drawing board of the renowned Robert Allan Limited design team, this model features the builders’ own considerable input as an experienced operator in its own right.
“Now this has been further augmented by operational experience from nearly 40 examples delivered by us all around the world. This feedback is proving invaluable,” says project director, Ali Gürün. “Not only that, the Bogacay is based on our earlier model, the Ulupinar Class which in turn was based on a number of very successful Seaspan and Groupe Ocean tugs operating in Canada. The evolution carries on.”
The latest order comes for a RINA classed, FiFi1 notation, 75 tonnes bollard pull Bogacay from Rimorchitori Napolitani based in Naples, already the proud owners of several modern Sanmar built tugs. In fact Sanmar enjoys a very fruitful relationship with a number of discerning Italian owners who jointly operate some 17 Sanmar built tugs and others are in build and will soon be making the crossing to Italy. This particular new vessel will measure 24.40m overall with a beam of 11.25m and be driven by a pair of Caterpillar main engines, each of 2350kW. These turn Rolls-Royce type US 255 FP Z-drives with built-in slipping clutch. The external fire-fighting system will be powered by a dedicated diesel engine.
Over the relatively short but notable history of this model, Sanmar has built 60, 70 and 75 plus tonne BP versions for such places as Italy, the Netherlands and the UK, as well as Africa, South America, Sri Lanka, the Middle East and the Caribbean region. Adds Gürün: “There are also a number operating in our domestic market including some in our own fleet. We are therefore able to keep a close eye on how well these are performing over time.”
“Customers have the choice,” he maintains. “They can buy an ordinary tug or they can opt for a quality built product which benefits from unrivalled experience in a variety of operational conditions and at extremely competitive costs. Here at Sanmar, we don’t do ordinary.”
